To make your child's recovery easier, here are a few guidelines for you to follow.

• Your child may have burning with urination after this procedure. This is normal. There are a few things you can do to make it better. Increase fluids for 24 hours. Water and apple juice are good choices. Encourage your child to urinate more frequently than usual. The fuller the bladder, the more it will hurt. You can put your child in a warm bath and let him/her urinate in the water. This helps dilute the urine as it comes out.
• A small amount of blood in the urine is normal.
• You can give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol) every four hours if he/she is irritable or has a fever. Please call us if he/she develops a fever over 101.5.
• If you child has problems urinating or you have any questions or concerns, call our office at (615) 936-1060.

After the Deflux Injection your child may have a small amount of blood in their urine. This is normal and will go away.

Boys will have some swelling at the tip of the penis. This is normal and will go away.

Your child may have soreness in the bladder or burning during urination. This will also go away. To help with the burning sensation your child may sit in a bath to urinate. Increasing fluids and encouraging your child to urinate more often also helps. Water and apple juice are good choices.

Your child may have some mild pain in his or her side when moving quickly. If it is severe, please call us.

If your child has fever or cloudy/foul-smelling urine or you have any questions or concerns, call our office at (615) 936-1060.

You can give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol) every four hours if irritable or a fever develops. Please call us if the fever exceeds 101.5. If we provided pain medicine you can use this for 24 hours, but only if you think it is needed. Older children may need it longer. The prescription pain medicine has Tylenol in it. Do not give both.

Remove the bandage after 24 hours. The Steri-Strips will fall off in about a week.

Do not put your child in the bath or shower for five days. You may use a sponge bath during this time. No swimming for two weeks.

Redness, swelling, and bruising of the scrotum is normal and will gradually get better. Swelling, especially of the scrotum, can last for months. This does not mean the hernia has returned.

Do not let your son play on straddle toys, bikes, or straddle swings until after his follow-up appointment.

Teenagers should not drive for two weeks.

Your child may have a small stent (tube) inserted in his penis. His urine will drain from this tube. You will need to double diaper until the tube is removed. Cut a hole in the first diaper and put the tube through the hole. Then put on a second diaper as usual.

At each diaper change, apply a large amount of antibiotic ointment like Neosporin® to the head of the penis.

You can give your son acetaminophen (Tylenol) every four hours if he is irritable or has a fever. Please call us if he develops a fever over 101.5. If we provided prescription pain medicine, use it only if needed. The prescription pain medicine has Tylenol in it. Do not give both.

Your child may have bladder spasms and suddenly begin crying or acting like he is in pain. The Ditropan prescription will help with this.

If your child has a stent we will remove the bandage in the clinic if it has not already fallen off. If your child does not have a stent, remove the bandage after five days. You can put your child in the bath to help loosen it, or dampen it with hydrogen peroxide. Slide the dressing off the end. If it gets stuck at the base of the penis it will get too tight and needs to come off immediately. It is okay if the bandage falls off early. Simply clean the area as directed.

After the bandage is off, clean the penis with hydrogen peroxide, especially around the stitches. Pat dry and apply a large amount of antibiotic ointment. Do this twice a day for two weeks. This will reduce pain and keep the penis from sticking to the diaper.

Do not put your son in the bath or shower for five days. You can use a sponge bath instead. If the dressing becomes soiled use hydrogen peroxide and/or baby wipes, then apply the Neosporin as usual. It's okay if it doesn't come totally clean. Do the best you can.

Redness, swelling, and bruising are normal and will gradually improve. The swelling may get worse after the bandage comes off.

Do not let your son swim or play on straddle toys, bikes, or straddle swings until after his follow-up appointment.

Your doctor may ask you to remove the stent at home using this string. Your child may have stomach or pelvic pain because of the stent.

Please call us if the fever exceeds 101.5. If we provided prescription pain medicine, only give as needed. The prescription pain medicine has Tylenol in it. Do not give both.

It is common for children to be sick to their stomach after stone surgery. This should improve in the first 24 hours.
